Taylor University's Silent Night Tradition

College Sports have many great traditions throughout out all sports, but there is one, a tradition from Taylor University that has to be one of the coolest ones I've ever seen.

On the Friday before finals week, everyone gets all dressed up in pajamas and heads out the the Taylor U basketball game.  At the game, they stay dead silent, no cheering, or whatever.  But once the 10th point is scored for the home team, the crown explodes.  It's amazing to see.  Here's a video!

How cool is that, eh?  Man, that looks like a blast. Plus afterwards they go to a Christmas party and the President reads a Christmas Story, and they eat cookies and Santa is there, and all that jazz.  It seems like a nice thing for the students to break the ice and the tension before finals week.  I thought this was one of the neatest things I've seen.  Hope you enjoy it.

I Like the Super Bowl

On January 28th, 1990, I was an impressionable 6-year-old boy, with a growing love for the game of American Football.  My father was a big Green Bay Packer fan, and like any good son, so was I.  But on that day, I witnessed greatness.  That was the day that Super Bowl XXIV, or 24 if you don't know your Roman Numerals. In that game, I witnessed Joe Montana throw touchdown pass after touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos, and from that day forward, I was a fan of the San Fransisco 49ers.  Joe Montana was my hero, and I still have my posters that I had gotten from the era rolled up in a closet in our apartment.

I have had a long-running off and on relationship with the Green Bay Packers.  I started to detest the team when they kept beating my beloved 49ers in playoff game after playoff game.  It was their dominance over my team that caused me to strongly dislike the team.  After a while, I grew out of that phase, because it didn't really matter.  Now I'm a casual observer of the team from northern Wisconsin.  And today, as a good son once again, I will root for the Green Bay Packers in tonight's Super Bowl XLV.  Because the Packers winning a championship means so much to the fans, and I have a lot of friends that are fans of the team.  I understand what it feels like to watch your team win it all, even though it's been since 1994 that my team last accomplished the feat.  In fact, the Packers have won a title more recently than my team has (1996).  But still, whenever you get the chance to win the championship, you must relish it.

I mention the date above, the day I became a fan of the 49ers, because I always wonder what kid, somewhere in the world will be watching a game, and discover their hero.  Their sports hero that they will keep a poster in their closet until they have outgrown the days of putting sports posters up in their bedrooms.  Somewhere, a kid will see either Aaron Rodgers or perhaps Ben Rothlesberger or any another player tonight, and witness one of these men do something great, and forever be affected.  Some kid somewhere will remember tonight for the rest of their lives, the same way I remember Joe Montana carving up the Broncos on that fateful night in New Orleans.  You don't have to be a fan of the most local team around.  You can idolize anyone you want.

Tonight, the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers will do battle for the Lombardi Trophy in Dallas, TX.  The Super Bowl always holds a special place in my heart, mainly because I haven't missed one since that game in 1990.  I've watched every second of every Super Bowl, and I remember where I was for every one of them, as well.  I watched most of these Super Bowls with my father, and that's something I regret not being able to do here in Tennessee.  But weather I'm on my couch with my wife and my unborn child and my good friend Sean, or if I was at my dads, it does not matter.  I will have a good time watching the Super Bowl, and as history would indicate, I will never forget where I was to watch Super Bowl XLV.  But no matter the outcome, I will never forget that night where I fell in love with Joe Montana.

PLAY BALL!!!

So tomorrow, is a personal holiday for me. Well, up until this year, to tell you the truth. Monday, April 5th, is the opening of the Major League Baseball season. Yes, it's a time of optimism and hope that your team will have that magical run to the post-season, ending with a World Series Championship. It's that time of year when every team is tied for first place in the division, and everyone is (presumably, unless you're the Mets or Phillies) healthy and ready to strike people out or hit home runs. Yes, Baseball is back, and I'm trying to be excited about it.

Anyone who knows me would wonder what the hell happened to me to end that last paragraph in the way I did. "How could Brad, a through and through Baseball guy, be having a hard time getting excited about this season?" I don't know why, specifically, but I have my theories.

The number one thing that is making me inattentive to the upcoming season is I'm not working at the Casino. There, I would talk about the upcoming season with any number of coworkers to pass the time, namely Melka. Even if he was more concerned with betting on the NBA or College Basketball or the also-upcoming NFL Draft, he was knowledgeable enough about all major sports enough to be able to talk baseball. Phil O'Neill was also a good person to talk MLB with, but that was a long time ago. Mike Barry as well, but as was also the case with Phil, they only talked about the Tigers, which is fine. I like the Tigers...But not as much as my beloved Braves.

After a season like last, when the Braves were in contention for the playoffs for most of the second half of the season, you would think that I would be jumping for joy at the prospects of the upcoming season. Oh believe me, I am, to a point. But the number two reason I'm not freaking out about the onset of another wonderful MLB season is that my Nashville Predators are on the verge of entering the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I have devoted so much of my time to the Predators this season that my focus is squarely on them at this time.

I believe that after I read this latest issue of Sports Illustrated, which is a 2010 baseball preview edition, I will be much more excited about the upcoming season. And I'm sure that when the first pitch is thrown at 3:05 CST-ish on Monday afternoon at Turner Feild against the Cubs, I will be watching. I will be freaking, a little. Because no matter what, I love baseball and I love the Atlanta Braves.
